Ft. Thomas Group Session Recaps

June 2023 Session

Hello!

This month, we had 30 quilts and 2 afghans dropped off at our meeting to deliver to the Ronald McDonald House. Well done everyone!!

The themes next month are jelly roll and medallion. I’ve been bundling fabrics and trying to convince you all to take them home to make the medallion quilts (thank you to those who are accepting this challenge). Bev decided to throw down the gauntlet and issue a challenge to our group for next month, by suggesting we have a jellyroll race. I like it!

What the heck is a jelly roll race? Well, from my brief internet search, there are many renditions of this, but what we came up with was to use a QAYG (quilt as you go) method, which will speed up the process of completing our quilts, and it won’t get all wonky. If you’ve never used this method, you can watch minutes 1-5 of this video to essentially see what we will be doing (the marking isn’t necessary for our purposes). You could honestly go right to the 4-minute mark to get the gist. Mom will also be happy to show you the technique and has volunteered to do a demo promptly at 5:30pm for anyone interested.

Here’s the breakdown:

Wednesday, July 5th – Jelly Roll Race Quilt

Mom is supplying 45″ batting

Emily is supplying 45″ backing (& bandaids)

You are bringing:

  • your sewing machine
  • walking foot
  • jelly roll(s) to use or share.

On Pinterest, I found a board that had a lot of fun variations to the jelly roll race quilt. Adding a little solid block, a bold strip in the opposite direction with some orphan blocks or flying geese, adding a border or some applique, etc. are all interesting ways to break up the strips. Make sure to bring those additions if you choose to go that route.

Ok, now that I’ve covered that, on to the quilts turned in:

Aren’t those dragonflies in the afghan amazing? Well done, Pat!

See you next month!

~ Emily
